Here are six common problems, what usually causes each one and when it's time to call.

We trace weak heat through the refrigerant charge, the defrost cycle and the backup heat strips until we find what failed. Call if the house keeps slipping below the setting. Most urgent no-heat calls are scheduled the same day.

If the backup strips in the air handler run all day, the outdoor unit usually isn't doing its share. We test the capacitor, the contactor (the switch that turns that unit on), the compressor and the refrigerant level. Call if "aux" won't leave the screen.

A light frost that melts off every so often is normal. A solid block that stays put means the defrost control, a sensor, the outdoor fan or low refrigerant needs attention. We find which one and repair it. If the ice won't clear, call.

A hum with no fan is often a weak capacitor, which gives the motors their starting kick. We test it, the contactor and the fan motor. Turn it off at the thermostat and the outdoor disconnect, don't keep resetting the breaker, and call.

Weak heat in both modes points to a refrigerant leak. Cold air all winter can mean the reversing valve, which flips the system between heating and cooling, is stuck. We read the pressures, find the leak and fix it, and only then recharge.

Call us if a wall head blinks a code, drips water or blows the wrong temperature. We read the code, clear the drain and check the sensors and the small outdoor unit, then service the system. Ring us once a room stops feeling right.
More than one in four Warminster homes heats with electricity, and among rentals it's more than half. In Warminster Heights it's about half of all homes. Many of those all-electric houses and apartments run a heat pump with electric backup. The newer townhouses and additions around the township often have a heat pump or a mini-split of their own. Landlords call us for their tenants, too.
Here's what that means for a visit. In an all-electric home the heat pump and its backup strips are the only heat you've got, so we don't judge one part on its own. We check the outdoor unit and the air handler, which is the indoor cabinet holding the blower and the backup strips, as one system. Then we watch a defrost cycle before we leave.
The strips can hide a dead outdoor unit for weeks. The house stays warm and the meter keeps spinning. If the thermostat says "aux" all day, call 215-639-0424 before the next PECO bill does the talking.

Here's how a repair visit runs.
We keep common parts like capacitors and contactors on the truck.
Describe what's happening and read us the thermostat screen, whether it shows heat, aux or emergency. You'll get a text reminder the day before and the day of, plus your technician's photo before arrival.
We check the outdoor unit, read the refrigerant pressures, put the defrost control through its paces and test the air handler and backup heat.
The scope and cost go on paper. Nothing gets fixed until you approve it.
We make the repair. Then we run the system in heat mode, through a defrost cycle and with the backup heat staging on before we pack up.
When a heat pump quits in February, you need someone who answers, knows the equipment and is straight about the bill.

“Technician Dave from Region Home Service diagnosed my heat pump since it was continuously calling the aux and compressor wasn’t running. Within minutes he was able to fix the same. They arrived at a very short notice and saved me as I was worried with the upcoming inclement weather in a couple days. …”
“Awesome experience by Bill, had my heat pump blowing hot again in no time…”
“Region HVAC service technician, Dontae, was thorough and efficient at diagnosing an issue with our second floor heat pump system. Highly recommend Region service!”
“Had a new heat pump installed. The estimate was clear and there was no pressure to sign that day. When I made my decision a month later, getting an appointment for the work was fast. The work was done on time. … Great job at a great price.”
Heat pump trouble usually shows up in one of a handful of ways. Each row below pairs a sign you might see in your Warminster home with what it tends to mean and the work our technician does once the unit is in front of them.
| What you notice | What it usually means | What we do |
|---|---|---|
| Cool air from the vents | Sometimes normal, because heat pump air is warmer than outside but cooler than a furnace's. It can also mean low refrigerant, a defrost fault or backup heat that isn't staging on | We read the pressures, watch a defrost and test the backup strips |
| "Aux heat" on all day | The outdoor unit has stopped doing the heavy lifting, often because of an electrical part or low refrigerant | We test the outdoor unit part by part and fix the one that failed |
| Outdoor unit iced over | A failed defrost board or sensor, a stopped fan or a low charge | We find what stopped the defrost and repair it |
| Outdoor fan not spinning or unit humming | A weak capacitor, a stuck contactor or a fan motor that's burned out | We test each with the power off and replace the bad one |
| Unit runs but the house won't reach the setting | A low charge, a clogged filter or a blower problem in the air handler | We check the charge, the airflow and the indoor blower motor |
| Stuck in cooling mode in winter | The reversing valve or the control that switches it | We test the valve's coil and the valve itself |
| Mini-split blinking or dripping | A fault code, a clogged condensate drain or a failed sensor | We read the code, clear the drain and check the sensors |
One caution. Capacitors hold an electrical charge even with the power off, and refrigerant work needs a technician with the proper tools. You can check the thermostat mode and batteries, the breakers and the indoor filter. Past that, leave it to us and call 215-639-0424.
Most heat pump repairs come in between about $150 and $650, and a typical one lands around $400. The part makes the biggest difference, since a capacitor and a compressor sit at opposite ends of the bill. Refrigerant comes next: which type your system uses, and how much it needs once the leak is sealed. Where the fault is also matters, whether that's out at the outdoor unit or inside the air handler. A ductless mini-split is priced differently from a ducted system.
| Repair | Usually runs | What moves the price |
|---|---|---|
| Capacitor | $100–$400 | Which motor it starts and whether anything failed along with it |
| Thermostat | $85–$300 | A simple swap, or a heat pump model that stages the backup heat |
| Control or defrost board | $150–$700 | The board itself, and whether a defrost sensor goes in too |
| Reversing valve | $350–$700 | The whole valve or just its coil, plus the refrigerant work around it |
| Refrigerant leak repair | $200–$1,500 | Where the leak is, the refrigerant type and how much goes back in |
| Indoor blower motor | $300–$1,000 | A standard or variable-speed motor, and how hard it is to reach in the air handler |
| Compressor | $800–$2,500 | Compressor size, refrigerant type and the age of the system |
| Mini-split repair | $100–$1,500 | A drain or sensor fix at the low end, a board or outdoor part at the high end |
The compressor is the pump that pushes refrigerant through the whole system, and it's the one big-ticket repair on the list. When it fails on an older heat pump, we price the repair and a replacement together so the choice is yours.
These are usual ranges, not a quote for your Warminster home. After the diagnosis you'll get the exact figure on paper. Work starts only once you've said yes.
Most of what we fix is an ordinary repair, including capacitors, contactors, fan motors and control boards, and we'll tell you to go ahead with it. We'll suggest replacement when the repair would run more than about half the cost of a new system, or when the same heat pump keeps breaking down. On an older system, a failed compressor is usually where the math tips. Either way, you get both options in writing so you can weigh them.
You may have come across the "$5,000 rule." You multiply the system's age by the repair cost, and if the result tops $5,000, replacement deserves a look. It's a common rule of thumb, not ours, but it works as a rough gut check. Financing is available for bigger repairs and replacements.

Call 215-639-0424 at any hour. A no-heat emergency is usually on our schedule that same day, which matters when January nights in Warminster average in the low-to-mid 20s. Until we get there:
No heat in the cold. Set the thermostat to Emergency Heat. That setting runs only the backup strips, and they'll carry the house until the technician arrives.
Outdoor unit buzzing, smoking or smelling of burnt wiring. Switch the thermostat off, then flip the outdoor disconnect switch near the unit. Don't reset the breaker again and again. Call us.
A block of ice on the unit. Leave it alone. Chipping at it or pouring boiling water on it bends the fins and can split the tubing. Use Emergency Heat and phone us.
Call Now – 215-639-0424We cover Warminster Township, Warminster Heights, Hartsville, Johnsville and nearby Ivyland. It's a roughly 25-minute drive (about 13 miles) from our Bensalem office. You get the same technicians, the same phone line and a written price first, just like anywhere else we work. If you're unsure whether we reach your street, call and ask.
Short answers for when the heat pump isn't behaving.
Often it's normal. Heat pump air comes out warmer than the outdoor air but cooler than a furnace's, so it can feel lukewarm on your hand. It may also pause for a few minutes while the unit defrosts. Something is wrong if the air stays cold for a long stretch, the outdoor unit ices over or the house can't hold the setting. It's usually the refrigerant, the defrost or the backup heat, and we'll trace it.
Usually it's because the outdoor unit isn't pulling its weight, so the thermostat keeps calling the electric backup strips to cover the gap. A bad capacitor or contactor, low refrigerant, a defrost fault or a compressor that won't start can all cause it. Aux heat coming on briefly in deep cold or during defrost is normal, but aux all day isn't. One of our reviewers had exactly that: aux running nonstop and the compressor not running.
If it's a thick block of ice that stays, put the thermostat on Emergency Heat and call us. A thin frost that melts off now and then is normal, because the unit runs a defrost cycle, sometimes with a little steam. Don't chip the ice away or pour boiling water on it, since both damage the fins and tubing. We'll find out why the defrost isn't doing its job.
The usual range is about $150–$650, and $400 is a typical figure. A capacitor usually comes in at $100–$400, and a refrigerant leak repair runs from $200 to $1,500. A compressor is the most expensive part and typically costs $800–$2,500. The part, the refrigerant and where the fault sits all move the number. We write down the exact amount for you to approve before we touch anything.
Usually, yes. Most mini-split trouble comes down to a clogged drain, a dirty filter or a failed sensor, and those fixes sit at the low end of the $100–$1,500 range for mini-split repairs. A bad board or an outdoor unit part costs more. If the repair would top about half the price of a new system, or the unit keeps failing, we'll lay out both choices in writing.
Call 215-639-0424 or send the form, day or night. Tell us what the thermostat says and whether the outdoor unit is running, and we'll set up your Warminster visit. You'll know the exact cost before anything gets fixed.
